As an elite athlete, health, performance and survival specialist, Ben’s ultimate passion is working with like-minded groups and individuals through his survival and bushcraft school, Logan Lore, teaching the art of performance and survival in a way that is translatable to everyday life. When he’s not in the backcountry of Wanaka with his Alaskan Malamute, Maska, you can usually find him testing new research on human optimisation, survival training and exploring with his family. Ben has worked and trained with fathers and sons through to corporates, professional sports teams, some of the world’s best athletes and military personnel.
Let’s start with a hard one – how old are you?
34 years young.
Where are you from?
Originally from Auckland but I live in Wanaka with my wife, daughter and son.
Can you describe yourself in 50 words or less?
A father and husband who has dedicated himself to living a life of purpose, passion, health and strength so my family and I can enjoy this world for all that it has to offer. I’m an independent thinker with a deep-rooted love for being immersed in nature.
What’s your earliest adventure memory outside?
Camping in an old cabin at Piha and being scared stiff of a possum that was on the roof.
What do you love about being a Macpac ambassador?
Being part of a high-performance team that is dedicated to living a life in the outdoors; helping others to achieve the same thing; and also to help the leave this world in a better shape than we found it so those after us can enjoy it the same way we did. It is a privilege to work with and help shape a brand through my experience, thoughts, and philosophies on life and the outdoors.
What piece of Macpac kit do you never leave home without?
Tell us about your best day in the outdoors or on an adventure.
A 4wd drive camping trip up to Macetown in the peak of Autumn with my family. Setting up the tent and cooking a meal over the camp stove whilst watching the smiles on my family’s face then relaxing next to the fire underneath the stars listening to Maska howl.
Who’s on your fantasy dinner party guest list?
A mixed bunch, but ones with amazing stories to tell. Kelly Slater, Tim Kennedy, Dick Proenneke, Denzel Washington and Heimo Korth.
If the world was about to end, where would we find you, what would you be doing, and who would you be with?
You would find me in the backcountry of Alaska wearing a fur hat living in a log cabin. I would be with my family and we would spend our days foraging for blueberries, hunting and making pancakes.
How would you sum up your approach to life?
Simple but calculated; relaxed but driven; filled with purpose and intent. Understanding the laws of nature and dedicated to forging a life that provides health, happiness, strength and resilience.
